The forerunner of today's brooch is the fibula, a garment pin that was in use until the 14th century. In its simplest form, its structure and function are similar to a safety pin; however, the numerous precious, lavishly decorated examples of the fibula are famous.
Until the Middle Ages, it was common practice to fasten clothing in front of the chest with the help of a brooch.

The primer in its many forms

There is an infinite variety of brooches. Very precious examples are disc brooches; as their name suggests, the pin is attached to a circular shape. The disc is often decorated with filigree ornamentation made of precious stones and gold . Some versions also use colorful enamel.
Another special type of brooch is the bow brooch, which consists of two plates connected by a bow. They were part of the costume of Germanic women from the 5th to the 7th century.
A very artistic method of decoration is inlaying. Here, precious metals are inlaid to create ornamental or pictorial motifs.
Animal figures were a popular motif for brooches. Numerous bird brooches made of silver, gold or bronze, often set with garnet gemstones, have been preserved.
Part of the costume of late Roman soldiers was the onion-head brooch, made of brass or bronze and gilded. It owes its telling name to its onion-shaped elements.
Another special form of the fibula is the agraffe, which is characterized by its characteristic fit (quatrefoil, hexagonal or eight-pointed).
