The Gemsetter and His Profession

A goldsmith who specializes in setting gemstones is called a gemsetter. His job consists of setting already cut gemstones into almost finished pieces of jewelry. The cutting, on the other hand, is done by a stone cutter, while the jewelry is prepared by a goldsmith.

The gemsetter must understand the specific nature of the various gemstones and take their hardness and material properties into account in his work.
The tool used by a gemsetter is the setting punch , which is a rectangular steel pin that ends with a carefully polished and rounded edge. The gemsetter uses this in combination with an accompanying hammer to press the setting precious metal onto the gemstone and thus ensure a secure hold.

The gem setter – different variations of the setting

There are many different types of setting for gemstones, such as the claw setting , the bezel setting or the pavé setting .

In a prong setting, the gemsetter attaches narrow pieces of metal to the gemstone, sometimes in conjunction with a ring of precious metal surrounding the girdle of the gemstone.

In a bezel setting, the gemstone is held in place by the gem setter pressing a narrow edge made of the metal of the piece of jewelry over the stone to be set, thus fixing it.

For a pavé setting, the gem setter makes small notches in the precious metal, into which small diamonds are usually inserted, which he then additionally attaches to the sides with small beads of precious metal.
