The Chaton setting and its characteristics
Chaton comes from the French and means setting. A chaton setting is a combination of a prong setting and a bezel setting. What this setting has in common with the bezel setting is the ring made of precious metal that surrounds the gemstone on its girdle and fixes it in place. In addition, a chaton setting has prongs that give the gemstone additional support.
Alternative names for the chaton setting are arcade setting or coronet. The name coronet can be explained by the fact that the chaton setting is reminiscent of noble crowns, which consist of a ring made of precious metal with applied ornaments.
