Characteristics of the blending technique
The term “cutting” refers to methods in which gemstones are set directly into the piece of jewelry – without the additional construction of a setting. An alternative name for this type is pavé setting .
When cutting, a hole is drilled into the piece of jewelry, e.g. into the ring band. Notches are then milled into which the gemstone is inserted. A burin is used to remove small pieces from the precious metal. These are then pressed onto the gemstones with a graining iron so that they are securely held.
Design possibilities with the blending technique
The cutting technique forms the basis for imaginative jewelry creations. It makes it possible to cover the entire surface of a piece of jewelry with small, closely spaced gemstones. The result is the enchantingly beautiful visual impression of a continuous gemstone carpet.
However, the cut is very complex to produce. Since the gemstones are only held by very small pieces of precious metal , this setting is relatively sensitive to damage.
