The emerald cut is one of the step cuts; these are cut shapes that are characterized by elongated, parallel facets . They look like steps - hence their name. The step cuts differ from the brilliant cuts, the most prominent of which is the brilliant cut , in that they emphasize the purity of the gemstone rather than the fire and brilliance. The emerald cut got its name because it was originally used primarily for emerald gemstones.

The appearance of the Emerald Cut
The basic shape of an emerald cut gemstone is that of a graduated octahedron, as the four corners of the rectangular original shape are flattened. The elongated facets, which are almost square at the corners, run from the gemstone's table in three parallel rows to the girdle. The underside differs from the top in that it has no table, but the facets, which are otherwise identically arranged, run towards an edge. Only stones of good clarity should be cut in the emerald cut, as the smallest flaws are immediately noticeable. A good emerald cut is characterized by the fact that the surfaces of the gemstone are polished to the finest detail.
