- Color: Chalcedony is characterized by its blue-white to grayish shimmer. However, there are numerous colors in the chalcedony group.
- Cut: To particularly emphasize its shimmer, chalcedony is often cut into a cabochon.
Quality factors
Color
The chalcedony has a blue-white to greyish shimmer.
purity
In the narrower sense, chalcedony is a translucent mineral with a matte, waxy sheen that appears in pastel colors such as blue-white or gray-white. There are both striped and monochrome variants. Sometimes beautiful patterns can be observed.
carat
The carat number of a gemstone indicates its weight. One carat (ct) corresponds to approximately 0.2 grams. In general, the heavier a gemstone, the more valuable it is.
cut
The gemstone, which has a Mohs hardness of 6.5 to 7, is usually cut into a cabochon shape, as this brings out its matte shimmer most beautifully.

Chalcedony as a collective term
One of the most famous representatives of the chalcedony group is agate, whose characteristic feature is its multi-colored banding. Onyx is the name for agate in the colors black and white.
Another member of the group is the green to blue-green aventurine, which has an impressively shimmering surface due to plate-shaped inclusions of foreign minerals.
Carnelian is an orange-red to brown-red variety of chalcedony.
The green heliotrope owes its nicknames blood jasper and bloodstone to its striking red speckles.
