Pearl Jewelry in History

Pearl jewelry is considered the epitome of luxury and has been for thousands of years. The pearl is the only type of jewelry that forms in a living organism. A pearl is naturally beautiful and does not require any further processing by human hands to unfold its splendor. This is probably one of the reasons why it has fascinated us for thousands of years. The South Sea pearl, with its particularly elegant coloring and extraordinary size, represents the beauty of pearls particularly well. Pearl jewelry was a sign of prosperity and wealth among the ancient Greeks and Romans, as well as among other peoples. In addition, it is associated with a certain symbolism in many cultures. For example, the Greeks were particularly fond of giving pearl jewelry as a wedding gift, as pearls were considered a sign of love. What could be more beautiful for a bride than jewelry made of South Sea pearls with their white-silvery or golden shine?

Special Pearls

One of the most famous pearl jewelry pieces is the so-called La Peregrina necklace, once known as the Phillip II pearl . One of the most famous owners of the pearl necklace was Elizabeth Taylor, who received the necklace as a gift from her then husband Richard Burton.

Special occasions

birthstone

The pearl is considered the birthstone of June.

wedding anniversary

Pearls or pearl jewelry are often given as gifts for 3rd and 30th wedding anniversaries.

occurrence of South Sea pearls

South Sea pearls are mainly cultivated in Indonesia, Myanmar, Australia, the Philippines and other islands in the South Pacific.

The conch pearl is one of the rarest pearls. Although the name suggests this, the conch pearl is not a pearl because it is not made of mother of pearl.
