Mother of pearl (an alternative name for nacre ) is the innermost, gently iridescent layer of mussels or the shell of sea snails. Pearls are composed of its substance, which is why it is also known as the mother of pearl .

All mussels have such an inner lining, but jewelers and jewelry designers are primarily interested in the mother-of-pearl of pearl oysters. These have a particularly thick and shiny layer of mother-of-pearl, which is ideal for creating a fascinating shine on jewelry. To do this, the mother-of-pearl is first cut and then polished to a silky smooth finish.

The color of the mother-of-pearl varies between different types of shell; the most well-known are the light colors with an iridescence in the color spectrum of the rainbow. The mother-of-pearl of shells from Tahitian seashells, however, is enchanting with its dark colors, which shimmer in deep green, brown-red and bronze.

The incoming light rays are prismatically reflected by the various, microscopically fine aragonite and conchyne layers into the viewer's eye. This creates a unique shimmer on the surface in the color spectrum of the rainbow. The vibrant, shimmering shine varies depending on the viewing angle and moves across the surface of the piece of jewelry as the eyes move.
