Naming : A pearl consists of nacre – an iridescent mineral that consists mostly of calcium carbonate.

Natural pearls and cultured pearls

This is why most pearls now come from pearl cultivation. Such cultured pearls are just as "real" pearls as natural pearls. The difference is that the foreign body in cultured pearls is intentionally implanted into the shell. The natural process of forming a pearl is thus given a little help. The formation of the pearl then proceeds in the same way with cultured pearls as with natural pearls - only the beginning of the process is different.
