Jewelry design is the design of jewelry such as rings , necklaces , bracelets or earrings. Before a jewelry designer makes a new creation, a sophisticated design concept is usually created in advance.
The first designs are still often sketched by hand. An additional detailed and technical drawing is also very useful so that the goldsmiths and gemsetters later know exactly which details they have to pay attention to when making the jewelry.
Today, jewellery design is increasingly done on the computer, but very traditional artisanal methods are still used, particularly in haute joaillerie, for the design and production of the precious pieces.
What makes a jewelry design?
In order to create a meaningful jewelry design, sound knowledge and artistic talent are necessary: the drawings should clearly illustrate the shape and form of the jewelry and at the same time reproduce the surface structure of the precious metals and gemstones as realistically as possible. In order to be able to assess the later effect of the finished piece of jewelry, the designer must have a good knowledge of the material properties of the precious metals used and the optical properties of the gemstones. The artistic aspect is of course very important in jewelry design, as the beautiful, imaginative design drawings of famous designers demonstrate.
