Aquamarin

overview
- Naming: "Aquamarine" is literally translated as "water of the sea" and is composed of the Latin words aqua (water) and marinus (of the sea).
- Mineral group: Aquamarine belongs to the beryl family – ancient Greek "beryllos" for blue-green stone.
- Color: Aquamarine gets its ocean blue color from the substance iron, which in varying concentrations creates an exceptionally beautiful color palette.
- Cut: Aquamarine is particularly popular in the emerald cut because it highlights the deep blue.
- Special feature: Aquamarine is dichroic, which means that the color effect changes depending on the direction of view. One and the same aquamarine can appear almost colorless at first and deep blue the next.
Quality factors
Color
Aquamarine can range in color from pale blue to dark blue or blue-green - an intense blue is the most sought-after. The more intense and transparent the blue, the more valuable it is.
purity
Aquamarine is generally very transparent and eye-clean, meaning that no inclusions are visible to the naked eye - even under magnification they have a very high purity. Large models are also available without visible inclusions.
carat
1 carat is equal to 0.2 grams and therefore indicates the weight of a gemstone. Generally speaking, the more carats, the more valuable the aquamarine. However, other factors can also be important.
cut
The cut brings out the blue of the aquamarine beautifully. Basically, you can decide according to your wishes, but cloudy aquamarines are usually made into chain beads or given a cabochon cut.

quality designations
The name Santa Maria is a quality designation for particularly fine aquamarines – named after a mine in Brazil.
Santa Maria Africana stands for a fine aquamarine from Mozambique (Africa).
Maxix aquamarine is considered a deep blue aquamarine from Brazil, which, however, fades in daylight and is beautified by irradiation.
Special Aquamarines
The largest gem-quality aquamarine was recovered in Brazil in 1910 and weighed over 110 kg, measuring approximately 48.5 cm x 41.5 cm. Many small gemstones totaling over 100,000 carats were cut from this aquamarine.
