opals
The gemstone with the colorful flashing play of colors.

overview
- Naming : The name of the gemstone comes from the Latin opalus , which means "to see a change". Another assumption is that it comes from the Sanskrit word upala (noble stone).
- Mineral group: Opal belongs to the mineral group of oxides and hydroxides.
- Colour: There are different types of opal - generally, a distinction is made between the common opal and the precious opal, which is characterised by its colourful flashing play of colours. Like a kaleidoscope, it takes on a different appearance depending on the angle at which it is viewed.
- Cut : The most common cut for opals is an oval cabochon cut. However, there are many other cuts that are closer to the natural shape of the opal.
- Special feature : The fascinating thing about opals is that they combine numerous enchanting colors in one gemstone - such as the intense ruby red, the harmonious emerald green or the ravishing cornflower blue of sapphires.
Quality factors
Color
In general, the purer and more intense the colors of the opals, the higher their value - a pale appearance is undesirable. The most popular opal color is a dark body color, as the fiery, colorful glow is best emphasized against this background.
carat
The value of a gemstone is determined by several factors: color, clarity, cut and carat number. The carat number indicates the weight of a gemstone - one carat (ct) is 0.2 grams.
purity
In the special case of opals, the color pattern is also important, making each individual gemstone unmistakably unique. There are many different variations, from clear geometric patterns to intricate drawings. The individual color spots can be tiny or large and wide.
cut
The opal is usually cut into cabochons. When buying, you should pay particular attention to the cut, the finish. The opal should have a smooth surface.

Opals and their proper care
Anyone who chooses opals should handle them very carefully in order to enjoy their wonderful play of colors for as long as possible. The gemstones must be protected from heat and caustic chemicals. The good news: since opals naturally contain water, they are very compatible with skin moisture, which is why you should wear your opal jewelry as often as possible.
Special Opals
One of the largest opals ever found can be admired in the Natural History Museum in Vienna. The precious opal, discovered in 1775, weighs 600 grams.
