kunzite
The transparent pink gemstone

overview
- Naming: Kunzite was named after its discoverer George Frederick Kunz, an American mineralogist.
- Mineral group: Kunzite is the youngest member of the spodumene group of gemstones. It was only discovered and analyzed at the beginning of the 20th century (1902).
- Colour: It has shades ranging from colourless to strong pink or violet. Kunzite usually has a soft, delicate pink colour, which is caused by traces of manganese.
- Cutting: Since kunzite is very brittle, it can only be cut by very experienced craftsmen.
- Special feature: The radiant shine of the Kunzite gemstone is particularly noteworthy. This extraordinary radiance can be compared to that of a diamond.
Quality factors
Color
The most sought-after kunzite is a deep pink with a slight bluish tint. Since most kunzite gemstones have quite light colors, a more intense color makes the kunzite particularly valuable.
carat
The carat number indicates the weight of a gemstone. One carat (ct) weighs 0.2 grams. Usually, the higher the carat number, the more valuable the stone. However, other factors also play an important and decisive role, such as color, clarity and cut.
purity
The kunzite has few inclusions and is very eye-clean.
cut
Kunzite is a very brittle gemstone that splits very easily and can only be cut by very experienced craftsmen. Cutting, polishing and setting the kunzite gemstone requires the highest level of skill from a goldsmith.

Pleochroism in Kunzite
Some kunzite gemstones have strong pleochroism. This means that the kunzite can appear in different colors depending on the angle from which it is viewed. The pleochroism can range from an amethyst-like violet to pale red to colorless. Some kunzite also shows strong yellow-red to orange fluorescence.
Special Kunzite
One of the most famous kunzite gemstones is the 880-carat Brazilian kunzite heart on display at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History.
