IGI (International Gemological Institute)

IGI

The IGI was founded in 1975 with its headquarters in Antwerp. There are now branches of the IGI in numerous cities all over the world, including New York, Toronto, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, New Delhi, Mumbai, Dubai, Tokyo, Tel Aviv and Bangkok. In total, the IGI employs more than 450 graduate gemologists.

The IGI and the Certification of Gemstones

The IGI's activities include issuing certificates for diamonds and colored gemstones . The organization also takes care of determining whether a diamond is a natural or artificially treated specimen.

Upon request, the IGI offers the service of providing diamonds with a very fine laser inscription on the girdle, which clearly assigns the gemstones to the corresponding certificate.

A special feature of the IGI is that the institute developed its own system a few years ago for evaluating the quality of so-called Hearts and Arrows diamonds. This is a special form of brilliant cut in which eight point-symmetrical arrows can be seen when viewed from above and eight point-symmetrical hearts when viewed from below.

The IGI training program

The IGI offers training courses in which knowledge about gemstones is imparted. This offer is aimed at everyone who deals with gemstones in their job or has a personal interest in this subject. It is possible to train to become a Graduate Gemologist at the IGI.

There are courses on a wide range of topics, such as cut diamonds, rough diamonds, colored gemstones, pearls or jewelry design in general.
