Natural diamonds with stunning brilliance and brilliant white color are rare treasures. It is therefore not surprising that numerous methods have been developed to improve the quality of inferior gemstones.
While these processes may seem to improve the color or clarity of the gemstone, they significantly reduce its value. Natural diamonds that have been cut and polished have a natural charm that is lacking in man-made specimens made from second-rate raw materials.
Artificial color enhancement
It is possible to hide an unsightly color under a thin coating of chemicals or plastic.
The HPTP process (high-pressure, high-temperature) is widespread. The diamond is exposed to high temperatures and high pressure, which gives it a more attractive color . This method does not have a negative effect on the quality of the diamond and only experts can tell whether a gemstone has been treated in this way.
improving purity
Laser drills are used to remove small dark inclusions in diamonds. To do this, a tiny hole is drilled into the gemstone and the inclusion is burned away.
Small cracks (called feathers) in the diamond can be filled with transparent substances such as oil, wax or resin. A major disadvantage of this treatment, however, is its impermanence.
