When dealing with the evaluation of diamonds, one is primarily confronted with the four Cs: cut , clarity , colour and carat . Sometimes there is also talk of a fifth C for certificate. In fact, the certificate is a decisive criterion when buying a diamond, after all it serves as a guarantee that the information provided by the dealer about the quality of the gemstone is true.
The certificate of a diamond provides information about all the important characteristics. The cut shape, dimensions, carat weight, color, clarity and cut type are noted. The certificate also provides information about whether the gemstone exhibits fluorescence or has other special characteristics.

The certificate of a diamond – renowned testing institutes
You should only buy diamonds that have been certified by a reputable, recognized and independent institute. The certificates from the GIA (Gemological Institute of America) are the most internationally accepted. The IGI (International Gemological Institute) and the HRD (Hoge Raad voor Diamant) are also trustworthy. These three institutes are characterized by their very strict evaluation criteria; the EGL (European Gemological Laboratories), on the other hand, set a more generous standard. In an EGL certificate, a diamond usually has one to two levels of clarity and color better than in a GIA certificate.
Laser engravings as a guarantee
One way to ensure that the diamond and its certificate really belong together is to laser engrave the certificate number on the gemstone's girdle.
