River – the “Old Terms” for the color grading of diamonds
The name River for diamonds in very fine white + and in very fine white belongs to the "Old Terms" (also called the yellow series). Today, the usual name for this best color grade is D (like diamond). The "Old Terms" were introduced in the USA at the beginning of the 20th century and the different color grades were given their names based on the places of origin of the diamonds colored in this way. The name River also comes from the USA, which then, as now, accounted for the largest share of the global diamond market. In 1970, terms such as River also became widespread in Germany, but have since been replaced by updated guidelines.

Diamonds found in river deposits were often notable for their exceptional transparency and particularly good color, which is why the name river became popular for particularly high-quality diamonds. Even though river is now outdated, the term is still used on the gemstone market.
River – the best level of the yellow series
On the yellow series, the colorless to slightly yellowish diamonds are divided according to their color nuance. River is the highest color grade because it is the purest. This is followed by Top Wesselton , Wesselton, Top Crystal & Crystal , Top Cape, Cape and finally Yellow.
