The first guild of diamond cutters was founded in Nuremberg in 1375. During this time, gemstones were first processed to improve their optical properties. The cut of the stone plays a particularly important role here, as an optimal cut enables the fiery sparkle of diamonds and gemstones.
Today, diamond cutter is a recognized training occupation according to the Vocational Training Act.

The diamond cutter and his field of activity
One of the tasks of a diamond cutter is to first make a pre-selection of which gemstones are only suitable for industry and which are also suitable for processing into jewelry.
During the cutting process, the diamond cutter first saws the rough diamond into a rough shape. The table facet is then created and the girdle - the widest part of the diamond - is cut. Next, further facets follow on the underside and crown of the gemstone. Finally, the diamond cutter polishes the surface of the gemstone so that it appears as brilliant and shiny as possible.
The Diamond Cutter – Planning the Cut
A diamond cutter's job also involves planning the cutting process in detail. The main thing he has to consider is which cut shape and size are best suited to the rough diamond. A three-dimensional, computer-generated model is often used to help with this, so that one can see which shapes would fit into the rough diamond. The position of inclusions must also be taken into account, as these should be in as inconspicuous a place as possible.
It should be noted that large diamonds are much more valuable than small ones, so it is often more profitable to cut one large gemstone rather than several smaller ones, even if the loss of material is greater in this case. Overall, a lot of weight is always lost during cutting - on average around 50%.
Other criteria that the diamond cutter must take into account include the popularity of the cut. For later sales, the brilliant cut is particularly advantageous, as this is where demand is highest.
For diamonds in fancy colours – all colours except white and yellowish – the diamond cutter must also take into account that some diamond cuts, such as the radiant cut, are suitable for increasing the colour intensity.
