Ametrine
The two-colored quartz variety

overview
- Naming: Ametrine consists of half an amethyst (light to dark violet or purple) and the other half a citrine (brown, grey, yellow), from which its name ametrine is derived.
- Mineral group: Ametrine is a bicolored quartz (crystal quartz) and is a rare gemstone combination. It consists of half amethyst and half citrine.
- Color: The gemstone is a combination of violet and golden yellow, with both lighter and darker variations. The stronger the colors, the rarer and therefore more valuable the ametrine. The true color of the ametrine can only be seen under neutral light. Under artificial light, its color can be completely different.
- Cut: Ametrine is processed into a variety of different cuts. The gem cutter tries to bring out both colors of the ametrine equally.
- Special feature: The combination of two different gemstones (amethyst and citrine) is extremely rare.
Quality factors
Color
The most sought-after ametrines show a beautiful contrast between their orange and purple tones.
purity
In a faceted ametrine, inclusions are usually not visible to the naked eye.
carat
Ametrine comes in a wide range of sizes. However, gemstones are not measured by their size, but by their weight. The unit of measurement for this is called a carat (ct). One carat is approximately equal to 0.2 grams.
cut
Ametrine is often cut into unusual shapes because it particularly highlights the unique color combination.

The Legend of the Anahi Mine
The Anahi Mine in Bolivia is the only commercial deposit of ametrine. Legend has it that a Spanish conquistador discovered the mine in the 17th century. When he eventually married a local princess named Anahi, he received the mine as a dowry. Today it is named after the princess.
Special Ametrine
The "Firefighter Memorial" ametrine is a 57.5 carat ametrine in the shape of a firefighter shield. The stone serves as a tribute to the New York Fire Department.
Special occasions
birthstone
Citrine is considered the birthstone of November, while amethyst is considered the birthstone of February.
wedding anniversary
A citrine is often given as a gift for a 13th wedding anniversary. However, an amethyst is often given as a gift for a 6th or 17th wedding anniversary.

occurrence of ametrine
The only economically relevant ametrine deposits are in Bolivia. The gemstone ametrine is also found in Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul). Because there are only a few places where ametrine can be found, it is one of the most sought-after and valuable gemstones.
