amethyst

overview
- Naming: Amethyst was once considered an effective gemstone against drunkenness. The name of the gemstone amethyst comes from the Greek amethystos, which means "counteracting intoxication".
- Mineral group: The violet to pale red-violet amethyst belongs to the quartz.
- Color: Amethyst in its classic violet form is a particularly valuable gemstone variety. The color scale of violet amethysts ranges from pink to a very light violet to a very dark violet. Amethyst in a dark violet is particularly popular for jewelry. The color distribution in the crystal is usually very irregular. Most amethysts gradually fade when exposed to direct sunlight.
By firing at temperatures of 470°C or more, an amethyst can take on different colors. The heat can produce green, light yellow, reddish brown or colorless varieties, for example.
Quality factors

Amethyst occurs naturally in violet or pale red-violet. By firing at certain temperatures, light yellow, reddish brown, green or colorless gemstones can be created.
carat
As with a diamond, the carat number is very important when it comes to determining the value of an amethyst. The carat number indicates the weight of a gemstone (1 carat (ct) corresponds to 0.2 grams). However, the color, clarity and cut also play a decisive role in the value of a gemstone.
purity
Amethyst is one of the relatively common minerals, but large and clear amethysts that can be made into gemstones are rather rare.
cut
Amethyst is usually cut in different faceted shapes (e.g. round brilliant cut) or in cabochon form.
