overview
- Naming : Padparadscha is derived from the Sinhalese word for lotus flower and refers to sapphires that resemble these flowers in their color.
- Mineral group: Like rubies and other sapphires, padparadschas belong to the corundum gemstone group and are characterized by their great hardness of nine on the Mohs scale.
- Colour : The Padparadscha can be described as a mixture of orange and pink and is sometimes compared to the warm sparkle of a sunset.
- Cut : The most common cut for Padparadscha gemstones is the facet cut. This particularly highlights the characteristics of the gemstone.
Quality factors
Color
The Padparadscha gemstone is pink to orange in color.
carat
The 4 Cs play an important role in the value of a gemstone. These are: colour, clarity, carat and cut. The carat number indicates the weight of a gemstone in carats (ct). One carat weighs 0.2 grams.
purity
Because of their bright and light color, the clarity of Padparadscha sapphires is of great importance; high-quality gemstones can be recognized by the fact that no inclusions are visible to the naked eye.
In general, padparadscha sapphires are purer than rubies or other colored sapphires.
cut
To emphasize its special features, the padparadscha is usually processed into a faceted cut.

The Padparadscha and its Origin
The original location of padparadscha is Ceylon in Sri Lanka. However, it is also found in Vietnam, Tanzania and Madagascar, and these gemstones are often heat treated. Therefore, many mineralogists are of the opinion that the sought-after gemstones should only be called padparadscha if they come from Ceylon.
Special Padparadscha
The largest Padparadscha sapphire is probably a 100.18 carat specimen that can be seen in the American Museum of Natural History in New York. But even at a size of over two carats, the gemstones are considered a rarity. Padparadscha sapphires weighing over five carats are considered absolute treasures.
Special occasions

The padparadscha, like the sapphire, is considered the birthstone of September.
wedding anniversary
A sapphire or a padparadscha is a popular gift for 5th and 45th wedding anniversaries.

occurrence of the padparadscha
Sri Lanka is undisputedly the place of origin of the highest quality Padparadscha sapphires, but beautiful specimens also come from Vietnam, Tanzania and Madagascar. However, these are often heat-treated to improve their color.
