- Special feature : Due to the richness of the colours of the tourmaline gemstone, it is considered the stone of the rainbow, about which numerous mystical legends exist. Tourmaline often has the fascinating characteristic of shimmering in different colours - depending on how the light falls on it. This shimmering is called pleochroism.
Quality factors
Color
Tourmaline is a gemstone that exists in a wide variety of colors. Sometimes the color even varies along the long axis of a single crystal. Green tourmaline (verdelite) and pink or red tourmaline (rubellite) are particularly beautiful and popular. But there are also black, blue or brown variants of tourmaline.
carat
The carat number describes the weight of a gemstone. A gemstone of one carat (ct) weighs approximately 0.2 grams. The weight of a gemstone, along with the color, cut and clarity, is very important for its value.
purity
Pink to red tourmalines often have more visible inclusions than green and blue variations.
cut
Tourmaline crystals are usually very long, which is why they are usually cut into fine and long pieces.

Green Tourmaline
Experts call a green tourmaline "Verdelite". Verde stands for the green color of the gemstone in all its shades. A green tourmaline can look dark brown from the side. Many tourmalines become darker when viewed from the tip. A green tourmaline is said to make you patient and encourage openness and interest in other people. It is also said to provide an overview when making difficult decisions.
Special Tourmalines
Particularly beautiful examples of the tourmaline gemstone are used in tourmaline jewelry. For example, the championship trophy of the German football league is set with 21 tourmaline gemstones. The DFB Cup is also decorated with tourmaline gemstones. Tourmaline is the first crystal in which the pyroelectric effect was observed. Due to these special electrical properties of tourmaline, it is also used in electronics.

occurrence of tourmaline
Tourmaline can be found almost everywhere in the world. In Europe (e.g. on Elba and in Ticino in Switzerland), however, the quantities and qualities found are rather insignificant. The most important supplier of tourmaline is Brazil, and in Africa too, more and more tourmaline deposits are now being discovered. Paraiba tourmaline is particularly sought after. The tourmaline gemstones with the incomparable, intense blue and blue-green color were only discovered at the end of the 1980s in a mine in the Brazilian state of Paraiba.
