Morganite

overview
- Naming : Morganite was named after the New York banker and gemstone collector John Pierpont Morgan. After his death, he bequeathed his extensive collection to the Museum of Modern History in New York. Morganite is sometimes referred to not by its specific name, but as pink beryl because of its color.
- Mineral group: The morganite gemstone belongs to the beryl group. It is the pink to violet color variety of the so-called noble beryl.
- Color: Morganite is characterized by its various shades of pink, ranging from light violet to peach. Morganite owes its color to the trace element manganese it contains.
- Cut : Morganite is particularly popular in the step cut. An opaque morganite is more likely to be cut into a cabochon - that is, round or oval.
- Special feature : Morganite has pleochroism, which means that it can appear in a slightly different color under artificial light. Morganite often shimmers pale pink to bluish pink. Morganite can also exhibit a faint purple fluorescence.
Quality factors
purity
Inclusions are normal in the Morganite gemstone and gas bubbles or liquid inclusions can also occur.
Faceted morganites in lighter or more intense colors usually have no inclusions visible to the eye.
Color
Intense colors are rare in morganite. A gemstone with a strong color is therefore particularly valuable. The most sought-after is an intense pink.
Larger stones usually have a more intense color.
Morganite gemstones that are not perfect in color or have a yellow tint can be improved by heat.
carat
One carat is equal to 0.2 grams and indicates the weight of a gemstone. The more carats, the more valuable it is.
cut
The better the cut of the morganite, the higher the value of the gemstone. A good cut brings out the most beautiful aspects of the gemstone.

occurrence of morganite
Morganites are found in Afghanistan, Brazil, China, Madagascar, various African countries and the USA.
Special Stones
The largest crystals weighing up to 177 tons were discovered in Mozambique.
