Gold earrings have been in fashion for thousands of years. They come in different sizes and shapes, as studs or dangle earrings, and in various gold alloys - the classic has become an indispensable part of the jewelry industry.
The History of Gold Earrings
According to archaeologists, earrings already existed in the third millennium BC. Surprisingly, they were initially worn mainly by men - for example, the walls of the ancient Persian Persepolis Palace from around 500 BC show stone-carved images of soldiers wearing earrings.
In the ancient Orient, precious silver and gold earrings were set with rubies , sapphires and emeralds . In India in particular, artistic earrings were and are an integral part of the culture.

The changing fashion trends of gold earrings
From the Renaissance to the 19th century, periods when gold earrings were in fashion alternated with periods when they were hardly worn. The reason for this was the changing fashion trends:
In the Renaissance, elaborate hairstyles and high, voluminous collars were in fashion, leaving no room for earrings. At the end of the 17th century, the jewelry made a comeback when hair was worn tightly combed back. This changed again when women wore large bonnets decorated with ribbons at the beginning of the 18th century, which made further jewelry almost superfluous. Thanks to the fashionable updos at the beginning of the 19th century, gold earrings were once again able to be shown off better.
A new form of earrings was developed in the 1930s: the ear clip, which made it easier to wear jewelry even for those who did not want to have their ears pierced.
In the 20th century, Art Deco brought about new designs inspired by Egyptian, Greek and Roman art. Gold earrings were increasingly decorated with gemstones arranged in geometric shapes.
Today, gold earrings come in a variety of shapes, colors and sizes – there are no limits to the designers’ imagination when it comes to design.
