Originally, a signet ring was used to engrave a ruler's seal on documents, thus guaranteeing their authenticity. In the past, for example, letters were traditionally sealed with the ruler's seal made of red wax. For this purpose, the sovereign's insignia was engraved either in the ring's precious metal or in its gemstone as a negative form - a technique known as intaglio.
The History of the Signet Ring
Among the ancient Egyptians, pictorial representations of scarabs, but also of gods and other animals, were common for a signet ring.
In ancient Greek culture, military leaders usually wore an iron signet ring as a symbol of victory. However, these early examples were still very crudely designed with their wide ring band.
As the Romans gradually refined their goldsmith skills, they began to decorate signet rings with precious stones and add detail using filigree work.
A signet ring was therefore considered a very valuable object and was carefully kept by the rich Roman families for whom it served as a status symbol.
For a long time, the signet ring retained its symbolic meaning as a symbol of power; one reason why it was often included in collections of royal insignia.
Over time, it took on different forms – its stamp mark could take the form of a coat of arms, a guild badge or an enigmatic symbol.
The signet ring today
Nowadays, a signet ring usually no longer has any special meaning, but is mainly used for decoration. This term refers to all finger rings with deeply embossed ornaments, lettering or figurative representations.
