Krupp Diamond

The Krupp Diamond owes its fame mainly to the fact that it was owned by Elizabeth Taylor and was one of her favorite pieces of jewelry.
It is also characterized by its extremely high quality and impressive size of 33.19 carats. In 2011, the Gemological Institute of America ( GIA ) analyzed the Krupp diamond and issued a certificate for it on May 9. According to this, it has the best possible color (D, very fine white) and a good clarity grade of VS1 (very small inclusions).

The Krupp Diamond and its Various Owners

There is no information about when and where the rough diamond from which the Krupp diamond was later cut was found. Nor is it known who cut it.

However, clues as to the period in which it first appeared are provided by its cut , an Asscher cut, which was only introduced in 1902. It therefore appears that it was discovered at the beginning of the 20th century.

Vera Krupp, who had married into a family of German industrialists, purchased the Krupp diamond from the jeweler Harry Winston around the middle of the 20th century.

In 1968, actor Richard Burton bought the Krupp Diamond for the proud sum of $305,000 and gave it to Elizabeth Taylor, his then wife. She wore her beloved gemstone on a ring and wrote her book "My Love Affair with Jewelry" about this special jewel.
