Black diamonds are so-called fancy diamonds. These are colored diamonds that are different from colorless to slightly yellowish-brown diamonds. Although the vast majority of diamonds are not completely colorless, but slightly colored, fancy diamonds have an intense color that makes them particularly attractive. Such fancy diamonds, and also black diamonds, are particularly rare and valuable. On average, only one fancy diamond can be found in 100,000 diamonds. Black diamonds get their color from a large number of dark inclusions, usually made of graphite.

The dark grey to black colour that characterises black diamonds is caused by a large number of black inclusions inside the diamond. These are usually graphite inclusions. Natural black diamonds are often difficult to cut due to the pronounced inclusion pattern. Attractive black diamonds for jewellery are therefore a very special rarity.

Famous Black Diamonds

Some of the most famous diamonds in the world are black diamonds. There is the "Black Star of Africa", which weighs 202 carats and was last seen in Tokyo in 1971. The "Black Orlov" is a black diamond weighing 67.5 carats. Legend has it that this black diamond originally weighed 195 carats and was set as the eye in a Hindu statue of the god Brahma. Stolen by a monk, the "Black Orlov" was cursed from then on - many owners of the black diamond allegedly took their own lives. The splitting of the "Black Orlov" into three parts was done to break the curse.

Treated black diamonds

Since black diamonds have become very fashionable and popular since the 1990s, black diamonds are now also artificially produced using radiation. Artificially colour-enhanced diamonds must always be marked as such in the certificate. The colour treatment can be carried out using radioactive radiation or by means of temperature influences. Treated diamonds are generally cheaper than natural stones, as the quality of the diamonds used as the raw material is rather low. At RENÉSIM you can only get natural diamonds online.
