Golden Eye – the name of the 43.51-carat diamond alone refers to its fascinating yellow-gold color , which is called canary yellow.
The history of the gemstone is largely unknown. However, it is believed that it was found in the Kimberley region of South Africa and initially remained in its uncut state of 124.5 carats for a long time. It was only a few years ago that a group of collectors in South Africa acquired it and the Golden Eye diamond was cut into its current form by the Steinmetz Group in New York.
Golden Eye – excellent quality
The Gemological Institute of America ( GIA ) confirmed the extremely high quality of the gemstone in a report. Its excellent color was classified as Fancy Intense Yellow - the best possible quality level for yellow diamonds. The purity of the Golden Eye diamond is also impressive: it is considered to be internally flawless .
Together with its considerable size and the excellent execution of its radiant cut, these criteria are responsible for making the Golden Eye diamond one of the world's best gemstones.
confiscation of the Golden Eye
It is not clear how the Golden Eye diamond came into the possession of the fraudster Paul Monea, but the gemstone was confiscated by the FBI in 2006. Its owner had been known to the police for some time and was finally caught by an FBI agent who posed as a drug dealer who wanted to buy the Golden Eye diamond from him.
In 2011, the gemstone was finally auctioned online and raised $2.84 million.
