A diamond in the classic brilliant cut consists of the following elements:
circular list:
The girdle is the area of the diamond with the largest diameter. It surrounds the gemstone like a belt. If the girdle is too thin, this has a negative effect on the stability of the diamond; if the girdle is too thick, it has a negative effect on the brilliance.
Crown:
The crown is the upper part of a diamond, starting from the girdle to the table facet.
Pavilion:
The pavilion is the counterpart to the crown in the lower half of the diamond. It starts at the girdle and ends at the culet.
board:
The table is the largest facet of a diamond and is located on top of the crown. It allows light to enter the diamond.
- Culet: The culet is a small facet that forms the bottom of a diamond. It has a major influence on its optical properties: if it is too large, a large part of the incident light is not reflected. However, there are also diamonds with a pointed end without a culet.
- Facets: On the crown of a diamond, in addition to the table, there are three different types of facets: eight star-shaped star facets, eight diamond-shaped bezel facets and 16 triangular upper crown facets. The pavilion is provided with 16 lower girdle facets, eight pavilion main facets and an optional culet.
