It is very difficult for private individuals to buy a rough diamond, as the rough diamonds are sold directly to diamond cutting factories around the world on diamond exchanges. Private individuals do not have access to these rough diamond exchanges, so the end consumer is usually only offered polished diamonds.

Where does a rough diamond come from?

The world trade center for diamonds is now located in Antwerp. Rough diamonds from diamond mines around the world (in Africa, Australia, China, Canada, Russia and South America) are delivered to the rough diamond exchanges in Antwerp, from where they are resold to diamond cutters. Private individuals do not have access to this rough diamond exchange.

The largest exchange for rough diamonds

The Diamantkring in Antwerp is the world's largest exchange for rough diamonds. For many years there have only been two German full members, as membership of the Diamantkring is only possible under the strictest of conditions.

The rough diamonds are then resold from the stock exchange to diamond cutting factories all over the world. Most rough diamond cutting factories are in India, Israel, China or Belgium. There, the rough diamonds are painstakingly cut and polished.

The cutting of rough diamonds

Before a diamond has been cut, it is very difficult to assess its quality. The quality of a diamond is determined by four criteria, the so-called Four Cs: color, carat, clarity and cut. Cutting a diamond requires exceptional craftsmanship, as the radiance and sparkle of a diamond can only be achieved and optimized through the cut.

How does the diamond reach the end consumer?

After cutting, the diamonds are sold via the diamond exchange for cut diamonds to wholesalers and from there to jewelers, goldsmiths and jewelry manufacturers. From here, the cut diamonds are offered for sale to private individuals, either as an investment or as a beautiful piece of jewelry.
