Legal Guidelines for the Gold Stamp in Germany
Gold stamps are not compulsory in Germany - it is also permitted to sell jewelry without this information. However, if gold items are stamped, then you must comply with the FeinGehG, the law on the fineness of gold and silver goods. This stipulates that the gold stamp may only indicate the fineness in a three-digit number in thousandths. For example, it is not permitted to mark gold with a karat, even if this is a common unit of measurement. In Germany, it is permitted to mark all gold alloys with a fineness of at least 33.3% with a gold stamp. The most common are 333 gold (8 karat), 585 gold (14 karat) and 750 gold (18 karat). The information on the gold stamp may not differ in value from the actual fine gold content by more than one percent.
