Carat describes the weight of a diamond. One carat weighs 0.2 of a gram. A one-carat brilliant has a diameter of 6.4 mm, while a two-carat brilliant is 8.1 mm in diameter. Although the two-carat diamond weighs twice as much as the one-carat stone, it does not look twice as large. The size of a diamond is not only determined by the number of carats, but also by the dimensions of the stone in millimetres, its proportions and the quality of the cut.

Cutting refers to the cutting and polishing process that gives shape to the diamond, intensifies its brilliance and brings out the visual effects inherent to the stone. The cut of a diamond is therefore the main criterion on which its value and beauty are judged. We recommend reserving a significant part of your budget for the best cut you can find, as the character of a diamond is primarily determined by its brilliance and fire. Therefore, the cut of a diamond is a central criterion by which its value and beauty is assessed.

Each diamond is a unique natural product and is rarely completely ‘flawless’. Clarity is determined on the basis of the number, size, lightness and location of 'inclusions', as foreign bodies or flaws in the crystal are known. The smaller and fewer inclusions a diamond has, the higher its value and clarity. The official grading scale ranges from FL/IF (flawless) to P3 (obvious inclusions visible to the naked eye). Most inclusions are so small that they are only visible under 10-fold magnification and thus do not impair the beauty of the stone. RENÉSIM supplies diamonds in grades FL to SI2. In the categories FL to VVS2, inclusions are so small that they are invisible to the naked eye. In grades VS1 and VS2 inclusions are only visible under a microscope.

Although diamonds can be found in all colours, over 90% of them have yellow tints from virtually colourless to visible yellow. As a general principle, the more colourless ('white') a diamond is, the higher its value. Light passes easily through a colourless diamond and is reflected to best effect. Diamonds are classified using a scale ranging from D to Z, in which D stands for the best and most colourless (whitest) diamond. RENÉSIM only supplies diamonds in categories D to M. Our diamonds thus have only a very slight yellow tint or are completely colourless.

A diamond must be extremely finely polished to ensure no traces of the cutting process are visible on the surface and all corners and edges are crisply defined. Polishing traces are almost always invisible to the naked eye but may impair the brilliance of a diamond to a very slight extent. Polish is graded in categories from Poor, Fair, Good and Very Good to Excellent.

Symmetry is the term used to describe the form of a diamond and the arrangement of its facets, which should be as uniform as possible. The quality of symmetry of a diamond impacts on its brilliance. The Symmetry is graded in categories from Poor, Fair, Good and Very Good to Excellent.

Fluorescence is the term used for the visible glow emitted by some diamonds under ultra-violet (UV) rays. Around one-third of all diamonds are fluorescent to a greater or lesser extent. However, fluorescence only impairs the appearance of around 10% of these stones (shown in their certificate as Medium, Strong or Very Strong). Over 95% of fluorescent diamonds emit a blue glow under ultra-violet light; other colours such as yellow or white are very rare. Blue is the complementary colour to yellow, the tint most commonly found in diamonds. Diamonds with medium to strong fluorescence are therefore often preferred as they 'cancel out' the natural tint of the diamond and make it appear whiter. In the majority of cases the strength of fluorescence has little effect on the diamond's appearance. In rare cases highly fluorescent diamonds may have an oily or milky appearance; however, this applies to fewer than 0.2% of all fluorescent diamonds.

The depth of a diamond gives the ratio between its height and diameter (height:width). Larger or smaller proportions impair the brilliance of the diamond by preventing the light from reflecting perfectly.

The table percentage of a diamond gives the ratio between the table (the central top facet) of the diamond and the total diameter (table:width). Ideal table proportions bring out the brilliance of a diamond to its best effect.

Buy diamonds online at RENÉSIM
Diamonds – the coveted classics among gemstones! To ensure that choosing your diamond is a unique experience and that you can enjoy it for a lifetime, we would like to familiarize you with details about the gemstone with its very special sparkle.
Buying a diamond is something very special - and of course the result should be exactly as you imagined it! But it all starts with the question of where is the best place to buy diamonds. And what do you have to look out for when buying a diamond
RENÉSIM offers you a selection of over 250,000 gemstones using a user-friendly diamond database. Thanks to this variety, we can offer you the most beautiful and exclusive diamonds available on the market worldwide. However, thanks to the simple operation, you can quickly and easily find your very own personal favorite.
Quality characteristics – the diamond and its 4Cs
A large selection naturally also brings with it a lot of decision-making options - the four Cs (4Cs) are important factors to help you find your way. 'What do you have to consider when buying a diamond? and 'Which diamonds should you buy?' - these two questions can be easily answered using the following criteria:

CUT – the cut of the diamond
The cut is the most important criterion of the 4Cs. Unique symmetries and balanced proportions, not too flat and not too high - the precise facets of a diamond must be harmonious. This is the only way to ignite the extraordinary beauty and fire in the diamond that makes it so desirable.

CARAT – the weight of the diamond
Most buyers know that diamonds are measured in carats, but what exactly does it tell us if a diamond, for example, has 1 carat?
Carat (abbreviation ct) is the unit in which the weight of a diamond is measured – one carat corresponds to 0.2 grams. Basically:
- All other factors being equal, diamonds with a higher carat weight are more valuable than diamonds of lower weight.
- The carat unit only indicates the weight, not the size of the diamond. For example, a 2-carat diamond is not automatically twice as large as a 1-carat diamond, even though it weighs twice as much.

COLOUR – the colour of the diamond
The appearance of a diamond is particularly influenced by its color. The color scale ranges from D (colorless) to Z (yellowish). The finer the white, the more valuable a diamond is, because a colorless diamond emits white light in the color spectrum of the rainbow. In principle, colors D to F are classified as colorless, while colors G to J are considered almost colorless. At RENÉSIM you only receive diamonds that have no or only a very slight yellow tint and therefore meet our high quality requirements.
- D and E: Very fine white
- F and G: Fine White
- H: White
- I and J: Lightly tinted white
- K, L and M: Tinted White
- N to Z: Clearly tinted
More intense colors, which are deeper than color Z and have a stronger color, are not classified as less valuable gemstones in the diamond color scale, but as rare and particularly valuable fancy dimaonds .

CLARITY – the purity of the diamond
Each diamond is unique and rarely 'flawless' - that is, without inclusions. These so-called inclusions are natural impurities in the diamond and are classified according to a clarity scale. The official rating ranges from FL/IF (flawless) to P3 (coarse inclusions). At RENÉSIM you get diamonds with clarity levels FL to SI2 - inclusions are usually not visible to the naked eye. Flawless diamonds are very rare and therefore extremely valuable.
- FL – flawless | flawless
- IF – internally flawless | flawless
- VVS1 & VVS2 – very, very small inclusions
- VS1 & VS2 – very small inclusions
- SI1 & SI2 – small inclusions
- I1, I2 & I3 – inclusions
In addition, all diamonds from RENÉSIM come with a certificate issued by an independent gemological testing institute. This guarantees the authenticity, quality and origin of your diamond and thus offers you essential security. Investment
There are many reasons to use diamonds as part of your personal investment strategy: The concentration of value in a very small space is a unique property of diamonds. As a scarce and finite commodity, diamonds show a comparatively continuous increase in value, which also historically has hardly correlated with the performance of other assets. In rarer qualities and/or sizes, the performance can be even more dynamic. The high portability ensures that diamonds can be easily carried around in all situations. Last but not least, diamonds offer an emotional return due to their beauty. We are not financial advisors, but we would be happy to inform you about which diamonds have historically developed particularly well in value and are particularly in demand. We would also be happy to advise you on putting together an investment package consisting of several diamonds.
Resale
Our specialization is to enable you to purchase the best diamond at the best price. We achieve this through gemmological expertise, the best international contacts and our database: Our offer was the first and is still the largest and longest optimized of its kind in the German-speaking world.
When it comes to the topic of resale, our clear recommendation is: If you have purchased a diamond as a private individual, we can only recommend reselling it to other private individuals. We do not consider purchase “promises” from dealers to be very realistic. If you would like to know how we can support you in reselling diamonds purchased from us to a private individual, please feel free to contact us.
