Cotton Wedding
Togetherness, love & gifts
It is the first anniversary that a couple celebrates after their wedding: the cotton wedding. A day that one likes to spend in loving togetherness. Preferably in a romantic place like Paris, for example, to swear eternal love once again on the Pont des Arts, or in Venice, where one can dreamily listen to the love songs of a gondolier. Even if it is only for a weekend, one enjoys the feeling of a second honeymoon. But when do you actually celebrate this day? Depending on which source you consult, the special day falls in the first or second year of marriage. Many people speak of the first wedding anniversary as the paper wedding, because the couple is still in the adjustment phase and has to endure many ordeals. Others, on the other hand, conjure up the carefreeness of the first year together - the warmth and security that surrounds the lovers like a bed of soft cotton.
Wedding anniversary – the cotton wedding
However, there is much to suggest that the so-called cotton wedding reflects the second anniversary. It is true that cotton grows within a year, but it is still a long way from being able to be woven into a stable fabric. In the second year, everyday life has already set in and the couple has had to face a number of situations that could only be handled together. The days of easily tearable paper are behind them. This already shows the strength of the cotton fabric, which continues to improve over the years.
The names of wedding anniversaries
Wedding anniversaries and their names have a tradition that goes back centuries, with small regional differences. Of particular note are the silver wedding anniversaries after 25 years, the golden wedding anniversaries after 50 years, the diamond wedding anniversaries after 60 years and, finally, the iron wedding anniversaries after 65 years. The golden wedding anniversaries had a special meaning, especially in the Middle Ages: gold was seen as the link between the female nature symbolized by mercury and the male nature symbolized by sulphur. As can be seen from the golden rings, nothing has changed in this regard: marriages forged in the fire of love.
It's a lovely tradition for a married couple to give each other gifts on these anniversaries. Not only do they want to make this day unique, but both partners also choose something special for their partner to commemorate this special occasion. In the past, a cotton gift was chosen to mark a cotton wedding. This is sometimes still done today; at least parents and friends still uphold this tradition. High-quality tablecloths, napkins, bed linen, and even personalized hand or bath towels—all of these are common cotton gifts.
A lasting gift, however, is a piece of jewelry. Jewels and love have gone hand in hand for millennia. Let us remember the magnificent pieces we can admire in museums today: gifts from noblemen to their ladies.
Nowadays, the bride receives a precious engagement ring , usually set with a diamond or a colored gemstone, upon engagement. Some brides are given a memoire ring upon engagement. The one diamond it already contains is joined by more diamonds over the course of their lives—at marriage, the birth of children, wedding anniversaries, and other significant occasions.

It is important to note that the wedding ring is the one that will be exchanged at the wedding. Over the course of the marriage, one or two rings will certainly be lost. Then a replacement must be found. This is then called a wedding ring.

Whatever you ultimately give as a gift on your anniversary, the next diamond for your memoire ring or a heart-shaped gemstone – remember: it is always a gift that comes from the heart.
